Hemp vs CBD: What's the Difference?
Share
They're related but not the same. Understanding the distinction matters for shopping smart.
Hemp: The Plant
Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant that contains less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC. It's the source material - the whole plant.
CBD: One Compound
CBD (cannabidiol) is just one of 100+ cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. When people say "CBD product," they usually mean a product where CBD is the primary active cannabinoid.
What Hemp Products Can Contain
- CBD - Non-intoxicating, wellness-focused
- THCA - Converts to THC when heated
- Delta-8 THC - Milder intoxicating effect
- THC-P, HHC, etc. - Various other cannabinoids
- Terpenes - Aromatic compounds
- Flavonoids - Other plant compounds
Shopping Implications
"Hemp product" is broad - it could be CBD oil or high-THCA flower that gets you high. Always read labels and COAs.
"CBD product" specifically means CBD is the focus. Usually non-intoxicating.
Full Spectrum vs Isolate
- Full Spectrum - Contains CBD plus other cannabinoids and terpenes
- Broad Spectrum - Multiple cannabinoids but THC removed
- Isolate - Pure CBD only, nothing else
