How to Read a Certificate of Analysis (COA)

If you can't verify it, you shouldn't consume it. Here's how to read the documents that matter.

What is a COA?

A Certificate of Analysis is a third-party lab report that verifies what's actually in a product. It should be available for every hemp product worth buying.

Key Things to Check

1. Cannabinoid Profile

Shows exact levels of THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids. Verify the product matches its label claims.

2. Testing Date

COAs should be recent - within the last 12 months. Older results may not reflect current batches.

3. Batch/Lot Number

Match this to the product packaging. If they don't match, that COA isn't for your product.

4. Contaminant Testing

Look for results on:

  • Pesticides - should show "ND" (not detected)
  • Heavy metals - should be below safe limits
  • Microbials - mold, bacteria testing
  • Residual solvents - for extracted products

5. Lab Accreditation

The testing lab should be ISO 17025 accredited. Look for their credentials on the report.

Red Flags

  • No COA available
  • COA from the manufacturer (not third-party)
  • Missing contaminant testing
  • Batch numbers that don't match
  • Very old testing dates
