Mindfulness and Hemp: A Natural Pairing
Share
Two Paths to Presence
Mindfulness and cannabis have been paired for thousands of years across cultures. Both aim at the same thing: being here, now, fully.
Here's how they work together.
What Mindfulness Is (And Isn't)
Mindfulness isn't emptying your mind. It's noticing your mind—observing thoughts and feelings without getting swept away by them.
It isn't about achieving some special state. It's about being present to whatever state you're actually in.
It isn't complicated. At its core: pay attention to what's happening right now.
How Hemp Supports Mindfulness
Reduces Mental Chatter
The inner monologue quiets. The constant commentary on what you should be doing fades. What remains is what's actually happening.
Heightens Sensory Awareness
Colors, sounds, textures become more vivid. When your senses are enhanced, there's more to notice. More reason to stay present.
Slows Time Perception
Moments stretch. There's more space between thoughts. The present becomes wider.
Softens Resistance
We spend enormous energy resisting what is—wishing we felt different, were somewhere else. Cannabis often softens that resistance. What is becomes more acceptable.
Practices to Try
Enhanced Breath Meditation
- Take your dose (low to moderate works best)
- Wait for effects to begin
- Sit comfortably, eyes closed or soft
- Focus on your breath—not controlling, just noticing
- When thoughts arise, notice them, then return to breath
- The enhanced present-moment awareness makes this easier
Mindful Eating
Cannabis makes food more interesting. Use that:
- Prepare something simple and quality
- Eat slowly, noticing taste and texture
- Put down your utensil between bites
- Experience each bite fully before taking another
Walking Meditation
A microdose + a walk in nature:
- No destination, no pace requirement
- Notice what you see, hear, feel
- When thoughts pull you away, notice that, then return
- Feel each footstep
Body Scan
Cannabis increases body awareness:
- Lie down comfortably
- Move attention slowly from toes to head
- Notice each area without trying to change it
- The relaxation of indica strains supports this
What to Avoid
Too high a dose: Impairment makes focused attention harder, not easier.
Anxious strains for meditation: If a strain makes you anxious, it's not the right pairing.
Using it as a crutch: Practice mindfulness sober too. Cannabis enhances the practice; it shouldn't be the only way you can do it.
Cannabis doesn't create mindfulness. It lowers the barriers. The practice is still yours to do.
