How to Store Your Products: A Guide to Freshness

Quality Degrades Without Care

You invested in quality products. Don't let them degrade on your shelf. Proper storage keeps cannabinoids potent, terpenes intact, and products safe.

The Enemies

Light

UV rays break down cannabinoids. THC converts to CBN (more sedating, less potent). Terpenes evaporate.

Solution: Dark containers or dark storage locations.

Heat

High temperatures accelerate degradation. Products left in hot cars or sunny windows decline faster.

Solution: Room temperature or cooler. Never above 77°F for extended periods.

Air

Oxygen oxidizes cannabinoids. Exposure dries out flower and evaporates terpenes.

Solution: Airtight containers. Minimize opening.

Humidity

Too dry = harsh, crumbly flower. Too humid = mold risk.

Solution: Humidity packs (Boveda or Integra) for flower. Store around 55-62% RH.

Product-Specific Guidelines

Flower

  • Container: Glass jar with airtight seal (Mason jars work)
  • Location: Cool, dark place (drawer, cabinet, closet)
  • Humidity: Use 62% humidity packs
  • Shelf life: 6-12 months if stored properly

Vape Cartridges

  • Position: Store upright to prevent leaking
  • Temperature: Room temperature (heat damages coils and thins oil)
  • Location: Away from direct sunlight
  • Shelf life: 6-12 months

Edibles (Gummies)

  • Container: Original packaging, resealed, or airtight container
  • Location: Cool and dark. Refrigerator extends life but isn't always necessary.
  • Shelf life: Check expiration. Usually 3-12 months.

Tinctures

  • Container: Dark glass bottles (usually how they come)
  • Location: Refrigerator for maximum longevity, or cool dark cabinet
  • Shelf life: 1-2 years if stored properly

Concentrates

  • Container: Silicone or glass jars
  • Location: Cool and dark. Refrigerator for long-term storage.
  • Note: Let refrigerated concentrates warm to room temperature before opening to prevent condensation.

Signs of Degradation

  • Flower: Hay-like smell (terpenes gone), crumbles to dust (too dry), visible mold (discard immediately)
  • Vapes: Dark discoloration, burnt taste, crystallization
  • Edibles: Off smell or taste, mold, texture changes
  • Tinctures: Cloudiness, separation that doesn't resolve with shaking

Quick Reference

Product Container Location Humidity
Flower Glass jar Cool, dark 62% pack
Carts Original/upright Room temp N/A
Gummies Airtight Cool, dark N/A
Tinctures Dark glass Fridge or cool dark N/A

Proper storage isn't complicated—it just requires intention. Keep it dark, cool, and airtight, and your products will be there when you need them.
