What to Do If You Take Too Much: A Calm Guide
Share
First: You're Going to Be Fine
You took more than you meant to. Or it hit harder than expected. Either way: this will pass. No one has ever died from a THC overdose. You're uncomfortable, not in danger.
Here's what to do.
Step 1: Breathe
Your body is having a stress response. Slow it down:
- Inhale for 4 counts
- Hold for 4 counts
- Exhale for 6 counts
- Repeat
Focus on the breathing. Nothing else right now.
Step 2: Ground Yourself
Name 5 things you can see. 4 things you can touch. 3 things you can hear.
This pulls you out of your head and into the present moment.
Step 3: Change Your Environment
Move to a different room. Step outside for fresh air. Lie down somewhere comfortable.
A change of scenery can shift your mental state.
Step 4: Hydrate
Drink water. Cold water. Slowly. Your mouth is probably dry anyway.
Avoid alcohol and caffeine—they can make it worse.
Step 5: Eat Something
Food helps. Even a little. Something with sugar can help. Some say black pepper (chewing a few peppercorns) can reduce anxiety through terpene interaction.
Step 6: CBD If You Have It
CBD can counteract THC effects. If you have CBD oil or gummies, take some. It won't eliminate the high but can take the edge off.
Step 7: Distract
Put on a show you know well. Familiar music. Something comforting and absorbing. Getting out of your head helps.
Step 8: Wait
Effects will peak and then subside. With vaping, you might feel better in 30-60 minutes. With edibles, it takes longer—maybe 2-4 hours. But it WILL pass.
What NOT to Do
- Don't panic (easier said, but important)
- Don't fight it—surrender to waiting it out
- Don't take more of anything
- Don't drive anywhere
- Don't be alone if you can avoid it
When to Seek Help
Seek medical attention if:
- You consumed something that wasn't from a trusted source (could be laced)
- You have chest pain or difficulty breathing beyond anxiety
- You have a pre-existing heart condition
- Someone is unresponsive
For most people, this isn't necessary. But if you're genuinely concerned, it's okay to call for help.
This experience will end. You'll be okay. And next time, you'll know to start with less.
