Traveling with Hemp Products: What You Need to Know
Share
Legal doesn't always mean simple. Here's how to travel smart with hemp.
The Federal Reality
Hemp products with less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC are federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill. This means TSA doesn't specifically prohibit them.
What TSA Actually Says
TSA's job is security, not drug enforcement. Their official stance: products that comply with the Farm Bill are allowed. However, TSA officers can't test THC levels on the spot.
Best Practices for Flying
- Keep products in original packaging with clear labeling
- Carry COA documents (digital is fine)
- Stick to edibles or tinctures - flower raises more questions
- Know your destination state's laws
State-by-State Complications
Some states have stricter hemp laws than federal:
- Idaho - very restrictive on all THC
- Some states ban specific cannabinoids like Delta-8
- Laws change frequently - always check current status
International Travel
Don't. Most countries have zero tolerance for cannabis products regardless of THC content. Not worth the risk.
Driving Across State Lines
Technically legal if the product is Farm Bill compliant. Practically, you're at the mercy of local law enforcement's understanding of hemp law. Keep documentation handy.
